Suminagashi: An Introduction to Japanese Marbling

$12.95

Don Guyot, 2005. Originally published in 1988 by Brass Galley Press.

Colophon Book Arts Supply founder Don Guyot’s classic instructional booklet on suminagashi, with drawings by Jaye Johnson. Reprint of the first edition with a bibliography and revised and updated suppliers list.

Don wrote this booklet with the same deep commitment to the wider subject of decorated paper which he applied to his work with Western paper marbling ever since he began studying that craft in the late 1960’s. He covers the tools, technique, paper, and problems and solutions - all the practical knowledge needed to produce actual traditional suminagashi.

24 pages. Softcover book measures 8.5x11 inches.

Don Guyot was a librarian at the Seattle Public Library when he began to study bookbinding, restoration, and marbling with Rodney Oleson at the University of Washington. His specialty was traditional water-based marbling in both Western and suminagashi techniques. During his influential career he taught countless workshops across North America and established Colophon Book Arts Supply, the first American company to produce and market marbling supplies and equipment, which is still in operation today.
